Shub-Niggurath – the black sheep of the woods with a thousand young – sought to conquer earth with her legion of minions consisting of demons and corrupted warriors. When Doom Guy defeated Davoth the current dark lord of Hell, the transfigurating maykers seized the opportunity to seal Doom Guy away so he could not jeopardize their cause. Hell kept getting defeated by Doom Guy over and over (and over and over and over). The elder demons possess the power of black magic, slipgates, and they hold their own dimensions/realms. Some demons such as Shub-Niggurath, Cthon, and Armagon are regarded as elder demons, although sometimes they call themselves ‘gods’ and goddesses’. The story begins with the maykers who transfigure into the cthulu monsters and demons of Quake 1.
Some bits of information is what I've personally tied together to make sense of things so some of my own head-cannon is present here. This is what I've pieced together based on official Quake games and some information provided by Hugo Martin and Doom Eternal.
